Our Snuggly Sack

When I (Wendy this post!) was a first time mom, our friend Phyllis gave me some sleep sacks for my first boy.  My mom and I thought they were girly and planned to only use them when everything else was dirty.  Then one sleepy late night, I had to use them.  I quickly fell in love!  I could change baby quickly without waking him and it was so warm!  Fast forward twelve years and I was due to be a mommy again.  This time I was wise enough to realize I NEEDED those sacks!  But, it was hard to find them!  Once I did, I found they were expensive!  Most cost just under $30.  Once I had baby number two I also found the sacks I bought were barely long enough for my monster-sized baby!  So when I recently had my newest bundle, I knew I needed to make my own.  And thus, the snuggly sack was born!

Fully reversible, the snuggly sack is a traditional baby sleep sack with a twist!  The sack snaps at the shoulders and utilizes a pocket fold at the feet to make diaper changes even easier.  The sack was created when baby Elijah began to quickly grow out of his sleep sacks.  I was frustrated at three problems I was facing:  #1 he was too tall for almost all the sacks we had and he was only 3 months old, #2 each night I would fumble with diaper changes as I zipped him in worrying that I might catch his chubbyness, and #3 putting him in the carseat carrier with the sleep sack on was either impossible or it required I made him half naked.  This kiddo is a July baby so by the time winter was hitting, his snuggly sacks weren't fitting!  0-9 months my left foot!

Here's how the snuggly sack addresses those problems.  It is extra long.  The standard snuggly sack is 28 inches from shoulder to fold (custom lengthening/shortening available at no cost).  The snuggly sack utilizes a pocket fold at the bottom instead of snaps, zippers, or buttons.  The pocket fold is reminiscent of the fold top sandwhich bag.  It allows for quick changing during those middle of the night feedings, locks baby feet into the sack to optimize warmth, and provides the option of staying open for more free movement of feet when baby is awake.  Finally, the snuggly sack, because of the pocket fold is easy to open when putting a baby into his/her car seat.  Simply open the pocket fold and snap the harness on as normal.  Where the traditional sack requires you to open the baby's chest and feet to the elements, the snuggly sack keeps baby warm from the knees and up.  With proper draping, the snuggly sack can also cover the feet after car seat buckling.

The best part about the snuggly sack, though, is that, because of the pocket fold design it can be worn by an older child as a nightgown or robe.  Paired with optional matching pj pants, the snuggly sack makes a great gown for those chilly winter nights.  Yes, some daddy's say it's a bit girly, but if you're a fan of the show How I Met Your Mother you will have heard Marshall proclaim that the sleep shirt is THE way to sleep!

The snuggly sack starts at $20 for the reversible sack with one side embroidered or appliqued.  For $25 both sides can be embroidered or appliqued.  And for just $30 get both sides embroidered or appliqued and a matching set of pj. pants (size 2 T standard).

The sleep sack pictured below is one of our first.  I regret that the pics show a wrinkled sack, but it is so because I USE it!  Isn't that refreshing?  A seller who actually uses her products!  I created the pattern myself so with each new sack I've improved on the design.  My latest improvement is the optional addition of buttons to the sides of the sack.  With the original design, only one side can pocket fold, but both sides can be used.  With the improvement both sides can pocketfold.  This makes the snuggly sack that much more versatile!  The buttons are optional because some people get uneasy about buttons and babies.  My sis and I are at odds on this one :)

Each side of our snuggly sack is wearable. This is the other side of the featured sack. Though both sides are wearable, only one side closes fast over the feet. Our suggestion is to use the opposite side for crawlers and walkers who still want to be snuggled, but need free feet.

The dominant side of the garment is shown here. Note the monogramming. Monograms can be made in a variety of ways. This customer wanted a larger, more predominant one. Note the pop of color on the bottom of the sack. This is the flip fold closure and it provides a nice accent when open. As your child grows and lengthens, keep the snuggly and use it as a night shirt or gown.

See how the garment closes, locking in and keeping warm precious baby toes. The closure can be flipped to front or back.
